NL Architects, the Amsterdam based architecture studio, was established in 1997 by Pieter Bannenberg, Walter van Dijk and Kamiel Klaasse. Their approach is marked by experimentation with forms, materials and programmes, as well as by seemingly effortless translation of witty concepts into complex and studied architecture. They were two time recipients of the EU Mies Award – as Emerging Architects in 2005 for the Basket Bar project, and more recently, in 2017, for the DeFlat Kleiburg residential building reconstruction (together with XVW architectuur). We were welcomed by NL Architect in their Amsterdam studio, in an old industrial building by a canal, where, surrounded by numerous models of their projects, we discussed their work with Kamiel Klaasse.
